Cosmic-ray propagation in the bi-stable interstellar medium – I.

1) Introduction
– Observational evidences of the presence energetic particles (or Cosmic Rays) in various astrophysical systems.
– Specific role of Cosmic Rays in astrophysical sources.
– The main category of Cosmic Ray induced instabilities

2) Two theoretical frameworks: the fluid theory and the Vlasov theory

3) Vlasov theory of plasma instabilities
– Normal mode analysis
– Instability analysis

4) Specific instabilities connected with the presence of Cosmic Rays
– The streaming instability
– The gyro resonant instability
– The firehose/mirror instability
– The acoustic instability

5) Recent numerical studies
– Numerical techniques: Particle-in-cell (or Vlasov), hybrid and kinetic-magnetohydrodynamics

Staff astrophysicist at Laboratoire Univers et Particules de Montpellier part of Montpellier University located in the city of Montpellier. My research activity covers different fields of astrophysical research: high-energy (X- and gamma-ray) astrophysics, radiative transfer and particle acceleration in compact objects (jets and accretion disc coronae), radiative transfer in special and general relativity, cosmic-ray research: the sources of cosmic rays, the propagation of cosmic rays in the interstellar medium, magneto-hydrodynamic turbulence in the interstellar medium. More recently, I have also been involved in the physics of young stars (jets and accretion). I am using analytical (kinetic theory, magnetohydrodynamic), numerical (magnetohydrodynamic, particle-in-cell, Monte-Carlo) methods as well as some modeling (one zone model of high energy sources). I am part of the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) collaboration since 2004, part of the Cerenkov Telescope Array (CTA) collaboration since 2011. Since 2013 I am member of the e-astrogam consortium and follow /support the amego project. I support the participation of France to the Square Kilometer Array.
